Jackelyn is a Staff Research Associate in Dr. Jenessa Gjeltema's lab at UC Davis where she conducts research on the environmental and health effects of microplastic pollution. As a member of the UC Davis One Health Institute, Jackelyn works at the interface of animals, people, and the environment to solve complex problems impacting health and conservation. In fall of 2020, she will begin her graduate studies in agricultural and environmental chemistry at UC Davis where she will continue her microplastic research in the Gjeltema lab and Dr. Swee Teh's Aquatic Health Program.
Jackelyn received her B.S. in environmental toxicology at UC Davis in 2015. Upon graduating, she spent 2.5 years employed as an Aquatic Ecotoxicologist at Pacific EcoRisk, a Northern California environmental consulting firm. She has a strong interest in community outreach and science communication. She teaches an online course on the art of science communication through the American Society of Cellular and Molecular Biology, helping students from around the world craft presentations for non-expert audiences.
Jackelyn is honored to join the NorCal SETAC Board of Directors in order to facilitate critical networking opportunities between members of academia, government, and industry and to provide career advancement opportunities to those starting out in the field of environmental toxicology and chemistry. She plans to use her skills in science communication and outreach to enhance engagement between the Northern California SETAC chapter and local communities, which she believes to be key to enhancing environmental quality and ecosystem integrity in California.
