Job Description and Duties
As a member of the Air Program in the Environmental Monitoring Branch, the Scientific Aid perform a variety of duties related to the DPR's environmental projects that primarily involve pesticides in air, but may also include soil, surface water and groundwater.
Under general supervision, the Scientific Aid:
- Performs the collection and transportation of air, soil, and water samples. While working in remote field locations, prepares and organizes sampling materials (label sample containers, calibrate sampling equipment, etc.), prepares documentation (chain of custody records and sample tracking records), able to navigate with maps and be aware of surroundings, ensures that strict SOPs and safety precautions are maintained during sampling events, able to operate and troubleshoot sampling equipment, and perform analysis of soil samples in field and laboratory conditions to obtain soil characteristics (texture, moisture etc.).
- Assists in analyzing data (e.g., Excel, R), assists in developing and managing databases, and prepares input files and processing output files for modeling tools that are commonly used in the Air Program. This includes entering data into Excel and Access, running/modifying/writing R and SQL scripts, retrieving data and files from the web and other databases.
- Assists in literature searches, product research, document reviews including conversion to ADA compliant formats, data analysis and quality control of large datasets, and providing reports on day to day findings.
- Assists in writing and proof-reading scientific documents such as Standard Operating Procedures, Quarterly and Annual reports, and Environmental Fate reports.
Working Conditions
- Must have the ability to conduct field work for long hours under a variety of climatic conditions, and operate vehicles on public roadways or travel to remote areas. Travel on short notice and overnight stays will be required. Exposure to pesticides may be required, and appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn.

R&D Chemist
Pay Range: $31.00 - 50.00 per hour

We are seeking a full time R&D Chemist to join our team. The R&D Chemist will be expected to learn methods and become proficient in the MAI process from production of samples to technical report writing. The analyst will take on assigned R&D projects with customer-specific requests, research, design, and experiments needed for a new method, or enhancements to existing methodology within the lab under the direction of the Technical Manager.
Responsibilities and Duties: The analyst is responsible for preparing standards, assessing calibration data, analyses of samples, and data review.
Any analyses performed are to be done in accordance with prescribed EPA or other regulatory methods based on the department. Samples submitted are tested within appropriate hold times for all types of environmental matrices (drinking water, wastewater, soils, and other matrices).
Instrumentation would vary from GC-MS, HPLC, LC-MS or IC and other equipment types as necessary.

We are seeking a full time R&D Chemist to join our team. The R&D Chemist will be expected to learn methods and become proficient in the MAI process from production of samples to technical report writing. The analyst will take on assigned R&D projects with customer-specific requests, research, design, and experiments needed for a new method, or enhancements to existing methodology within the lab under the direction of the Technical Manager.
Responsibilities and Duties: The analyst is responsible for preparing standards, assessing calibration data, analyses of samples, and data review.
Any analyses performed are to be done in accordance with prescribed EPA or other regulatory methods based on the department. Samples submitted are tested within appropriate hold times for all types of environmental matrices (drinking water, wastewater, soils, and other matrices).
Instrumentation would vary from GC-MS, HPLC, LC-MS or IC and other equipment types as necessary.

Qualifications:
- A four-year college degree in Chemistry or applicable laboratory experience.
- Must have instrumentation experience with at least GC-MS and HPLC. LC-MS preferred.
- Candidate will have good working laboratory experience using skill set on instrumentation to adapt to various projects with expedited timelines.
- The candidate will need to possess high-quality technical writing skills for writing Standard Operating Procedures, method validation reports, and emails to clients.
- Clear and concise communication with management staff and be able to verbally communicate with clients on projects at a technical level.
- Multi-tasking is a must in the lab environment along with attention to detail in completing all tasks.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Familiarity with a Laboratory Information Management (LIMS) database would be preferred.
- Good mechanical & and troubleshooting skills are an asset.

DUTIES
- Serves as the Campus Biosafety Officer (BSO), ensuring the safe use of campus bioagents and biohazards.
- Develops, implements, and monitors campus environmental and safety programs, systems, procedures, and training in biosafety.
- Serves as the primary point person for communications and documentation of the biosafety program including but not limited to ensuring the EH&S Biosafety Program provides guidance that is helpful and current, and periodically communicating with BUA holders regarding their BUA/training status, monitoring biosafety cabinet certification, review of relevant new equipment purchases and placement, monitoring Material Transfer Agreements, and other relevant information.
- Performs technical work, and conducts sampling and/or monitoring related to field(s) of expertise.
- Designs new and/or recommends improvements to existing processes and procedures
- Work with researchers/principal investigators to prepare Biological Use Authorizations (BUAs) for laboratories that work with toxins and/or human or nonhuman blood, body fluids, tissues, cell or cell lines, recombinant DNA, plant and animal pathogens, and transgenic species to ensure compliance with CDC, NIH and other applicable university, federal and state regulations and requirements.
- Conducts periodic audits of agent inventory to verify BUA accuracy.
- Provides guidance to researchers in the field or laboratory regarding safe work practices.
- Inspects, investigates incidents and complaints, and recommends corrective action as needed.
- Drafts reports and other documentation, including use of relevant scientific data.
- Works on committees and assignments along with formal and informal coaching and mentoring and regular training, including conference attendance.
- Within specific field maintains knowledge/expertise on existing/proposed changes in all regulations; interprets and applies relevant laws, regulations, codes and standards, including making recommendations for work environment changes based on interpretations and principles of professional practices.
