Alyssa Burns is a PhD student in the Agricultural & Environmental Chemistry graduate group at the University of California at Davis. She works with Dr. Peter Hernes studying carbon cycling within aquatic environments. Alyssa earned her B.S. in Chemistry from North Carolina State University. She has since worked for a contract research organization in Research Triangle Park (North Carolina), where she performed projects on pharmaceutical development and commercial stability. She then transitioned to a role within the Environmental Molecular & Toxicology department at Oregon State University, largely analyzing fungal toxins present in animal feed to provide support for domestic and international agricultural stakeholders.
She is passionate about climate change research, along with having effective communication about the planet’s future. She is a volunteer writer for The Arctic Institute, where she discusses relevant climate challenges in the Arctic. She translates key research concepts and findings for the greater understanding of the think tank’s audience, including elected officials, policymakers, and the general public. Outside of her environmentally focused research and writing, Alyssa enjoys spending time outdoors. Her favorite activities include hiking, biking, running, camping, and backpacking.
Alyssa appreciates the collaborative nature of science, especially when solving some of the world’s most complex problems. She is looking forward to joining SETAC and working as a part of a larger organization to promote scientific conversations and advancements.
