Research Scholarship Awards
NorCal SETAC offers annual scholarship awards for both graduate and undergraduate students. Students attending universities and colleges in the NorCal SETAC region conducting research on topics related to environmental toxicology and chemistry, and the environmental sciences in general, are eligible to apply. In addition to the monetary awards, students determined to have the first, second, and third best proposals will also receive a one year membership to NorCal SETAC. Applications are usually due in the Spring of each year.
  • Graduate Scholarship = $2,000

2020 Scholarship Winners
Congratulations to our 2020 scholarship awardees, Nicole Egan (undergraduate) and Aaron Ninokawa (graduate)! The proposals were chosen for their quality, originality, and creativity, as well as their approach and scientific methods. With these awards, Nicole and Aaron will be able to fund their pilot projects and travel to research sites or other labs. The NorCal SETAC Board of Directors thanks our Sustaining Members for making the awards possible.

Nicole’s proposal is an exposure study of Daphnia magna to environmentally relevant concentrations of Imidacloprid (IMI). This data will allow for a connection between mechanistic gene expression data and population level effects that are extrapolated from both swimming behavior changes and reproduction tests. This is especially important since IMI has been found at relatively high levels at long term California Department of Pesticide Regulation monitoring sites, and there is a lack of literature on the effects of IMI on the behavior, and reproduction of model aquatic organisms.

Increased anthropogenic CO2 is changing the chemistry of surface waters around the world. This can especially impact biological processes such as calcification, or calcium carbonate shell formation. Aaron’s proposal will use a method that can decouple the normally highly correlated components of the dissolved carbonate system to identify specific chemical components that most influence shell formation in some representative bivalves. This work will lead to a better understanding of the diversity and evolution of calcification mechanisms.
