Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, CA Job Posting: Senior Toxicologist
Pay range: $147,540 - $188,760 per year.

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, is currently seeking a Section Chief to lead our Cancer Toxicology and Epidemiology team from either our Sacramento or Oakland office. DUTIES
The Chief of the Cancer Toxicology and Epidemiology Section has an understanding of carcinogenesis and will provide expert scientific oversight and supervision of a team responsible for providing technical support for listing chemicals as causing cancer under Proposition 65, developing guidelines for assessing risks of exposure to chemicals that cause cancer, and conducting dose-response and exposure assessment.

Job duties will include:
  •  Supervising cancer hazard identification and hazard assessment activities, including directing the analysis by technical staff of scientific studies providing evidence on the carcinogenicity of chemicals.
  •  Supervising the development of carcinogenic risk assessments from exposure to environmental agents.
  • Supervising the development of white papers on cancer risk methodology and guidance.
  • Directing the assessment by technical staff of carcinogenic risks from exposures to environmental agents in the diet, air, water, home and workplace.


REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a Doctoral degree in Toxicology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, or a closely related specialty.
  • Either: a) one year of experience in California state service performing the duties of a Staff Toxicologist; or b) four years of postdoctoral experience in toxicology or closely related field, including the interpretation of toxicological findings relative to probable human health or aquatic life hazards, and one year of experience in the development and design of toxicological research and investigative studies.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in general principles of toxicology, with an emphasis in the area of carcinogenesis.
  •  An understanding of the general principles of public health and risk assessment.
  • Ability to critically review and evaluate highly complex scientific studies and other information relevant to carcinogen risk assessment.

CEQA/NEPA and ESA Consultation Specialist
Robertson-Bryan, Inc. (RBI), a multi-disciplinary consulting firm of engineers and scientists has an immediate opening for a part-time or full-time Scientist in our Rancho Cordova, California office. We are looking for a highly qualified, industrious, and motivated individual to work on various projects involving preparation of CEQA/NEPA documentation, preparation of technical reports, and conducting Section 7 Endangered Species Act (ESA) consultations associated with CWA 404 permits. DUTIES
Primary duties will include assisting firm principals with preparing CEQA/NEPA documentation and conducting ESA consultations for client projects that require a CWA 404 permit. Other duties will include preparation of technical reports, leading meetings, proposal preparation/support, and staff and project management. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate shall possess the following qualifications and skills.
 
Required Qualifications/Skills:
  • Degree in an Environmental Sciences field or a minimum of 6 years work experience in a consulting firm or government agency performing the above duties.
  • Expertise and experience in preparing CEQA/NEPA documentation. 
  • Expertise and experience in conducting Section 7 ESA consultations with (National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and/or U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS).

Summary: We are seeking a mid to senior level professional with background and experience in ecological risk assessment.  Work includes: data collection and analysis related to pesticide use in production agriculture, rights-of-way, irrigation and flood control settings; assessment of chemical fate and transport and human health and ecological risk; regularly interacts with clients and regulatory agency staff; prepares scope, schedule and cost estimates and manages projects.

Background Sought: A work history that includes ecological risk assessment, environmental toxicology and pesticide science is required. Background in environmental modelling, agriculture, water quality, regulatory compliance and contaminated site assessment is a plus. R&D Chemist
Pay Range: $31.00 - 50.00 per hour

We are seeking a full time R&D Chemist to join our team. The R&D Chemist will be expected to learn methods and become proficient in the MAI process from production of samples to technical report writing. The analyst will take on assigned R&D projects with customer-specific requests, research, design, and experiments needed for a new method, or enhancements to existing methodology within the lab under the direction of the Technical Manager.

Responsibilities and Duties: The analyst is responsible for preparing standards, assessing calibration data, analyses of samples, and data review.

Any analyses performed are to be done in accordance with prescribed EPA or other regulatory methods based on the department. Samples submitted are tested within appropriate hold times for all types of environmental matrices (drinking water, wastewater, soils, and other matrices).

Instrumentation would vary from GC-MS, HPLC, LC-MS or IC and other equipment types as necessary.
Any analyses performed are to be done in accordance with prescribed EPA or ASTM methods and based on department protocols.
Qualifications:
  • A four-year college degree in Chemistry or applicable laboratory experience.
  • Must have instrumentation experience with at least GC-MS and HPLC. LC-MS preferred.
  • Candidate will have good working laboratory experience using skill set on instrumentation to adapt to various projects with expedited timelines.
  • The candidate will need to possess high-quality technical writing skills for writing Standard Operating Procedures, method validation reports, and emails to clients.
  • Clear and concise communication with management staff and be able to verbally communicate with clients on projects at a technical level.
  • Multi-tasking is a must in the lab environment along with attention to detail in completing all tasks.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with a Laboratory Information Management (LIMS) database would be preferred.
  • Good mechanical & and troubleshooting skills are an asset.
