The Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) is
seeking a motivated individual to work as a Senior Environmental Scientist located in
OSPR’s Headquarters office located in West Sacramento. Under the general supervision of
the Natural Resources Damage Assessment Unit Environmental Program Manager 1, the
Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) will be in lead technical roles in Natural
Resources Damages Assessment cases following oil spills, and assist in grant management
for the Environmental Enhancement Fund (EEF) grant program. The successful applicant
will work in the natural resource damage assessment (NRDA) unit within the Resource
Restoration Branch. Challenging, but rewarding, responsibilities will include serving as
a natural resource damage assessment (NRDA) case lead following oil spills, and
participation on Trustee Councils that oversee large settlement funds as they are put into
habitat and species-specific restoration projects. You will also develop restoration plans with
our State and Federal partners, and oversee restoration project implementation,
management, and monitoring. This is a complex but fulfilling work is well suited for a
professional that seeks fulfillment in environmental enhancements and restoration of natural
resources, and possesses both strong technical and interpersonal skills.

Working Conditions
Ability to sit and use a computer keyboard for several hours a day. Travel is required to attend
meetings, training, project sites, drills, and spills. Public contact work may require irregular hours,
the wearing of a DFW issued uniform and operating state vehicles with a valid Driver's License.
OSPR is a 24-hour oil and pollution spill response organization. The incumbent in this position can
be required to partificpate in prevention and response training, drills and incidents throughout
California, and to be available to deploy/travel with short notice for extended periods (up to 7
days).

Pay range: $147,540 - $188,760 per year.

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, is currently seeking a Section Chief to lead our Cancer Toxicology and Epidemiology team from either our Sacramento or Oakland office. DUTIES
The Chief of the Cancer Toxicology and Epidemiology Section has an understanding of carcinogenesis and will provide expert scientific oversight and supervision of a team responsible for providing technical support for listing chemicals as causing cancer under Proposition 65, developing guidelines for assessing risks of exposure to chemicals that cause cancer, and conducting dose-response and exposure assessment.
Job duties will include:
- Supervising cancer hazard identification and hazard assessment activities, including directing the analysis by technical staff of scientific studies providing evidence on the carcinogenicity of chemicals.
- Supervising the development of carcinogenic risk assessments from exposure to environmental agents.
- Supervising the development of white papers on cancer risk methodology and guidance.
- Directing the assessment by technical staff of carcinogenic risks from exposures to environmental agents in the diet, air, water, home and workplace.
REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a Doctoral degree in Toxicology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, or a closely related specialty.
- Either: a) one year of experience in California state service performing the duties of a Staff Toxicologist; or b) four years of postdoctoral experience in toxicology or closely related field, including the interpretation of toxicological findings relative to probable human health or aquatic life hazards, and one year of experience in the development and design of toxicological research and investigative studies.
- Knowledge and proficiency in general principles of toxicology, with an emphasis in the area of carcinogenesis.
- An understanding of the general principles of public health and risk assessment.
- Ability to critically review and evaluate highly complex scientific studies and other information relevant to carcinogen risk assessment.

Required Qualifications/Skills:
- Master of Science degree in an Environmental Sciences field, or a minimum of 6 years work experience in a consulting firm or government agency performing the above duties.

- The candidate will need to possess high-quality technical writing skills for writing Standard Operating Procedures, method validation reports, and emails to clients.
- Clear and concise communication with management staff and be able to verbally communicate with clients on projects at a technical level.
- Multi-tasking is a must in the lab environment along with attention to detail in completing all tasks.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Familiarity with a Laboratory Information Management (LIMS) database would be preferred.
