Jobs and Opportunities
Environmental Research Chemist/Scientist/Engineer - Final Filing Date: Until Filled
Apply now to join a dynamic team at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project. The SCCWRP is a nationally recognized, independent aquatic science institute addressing some of the most difficult issues now facing environmental managers. We provide the cutting-edge research needed for water quality management decision-making and policy development, in a region home to more than 22 million people and one of the most ecologically rich and diverse ecosystems in the world.
SCCWRP seeks an early career research team member to quantify and delineate the sources, fate and transport of contaminants. The focus of this position will be on understanding multi-media transport pathways (wastewater, stormwater, atmospheric deposition, amongst others) for organic contaminants, especially contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), as well as traditional legacy contaminants. The researcher will develop an independent research program to design environmental sampling programs, to lead efforts in the laboratory for analysis, to assess environmental transport and fate of these contaminants, and to quantify the mass balance of contaminants amongst pollutant sources. These
initiatives will be synergized through the researcher’s work with a team of other PhD researchers, within SCCWRP and with collaborators, to determine the relative environmental risk of these contaminants on humans and aquatic life, as well as how to optimize pollutant source control or treatment to minimize this environmental risk.
To have the largest career impact, and to increase your success at SCCWRP, candidates should be motivated to translate their research successfully into management action. SCCWRP maintains close connections with the region’s preeminent water quality management agencies, including amongst the country’s largest wastewater and stormwater regulated agencies, as well as the federal, state, and local agencies that regulate their discharges. SCCWRP values the building of research partner relationships and coalescing scientific consensus, crucial to handle the daunting issues facing water quality managers. SCCWRP partnerships encompassed over 170 different research partner institutions
around the globe in 2021, underscoring our commitment to conducting applied research with national and international impact.
If you are an early career researcher excited to conduct world-leading research and translate it effectively into management action, please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for at least three professional references to envchem-scientist@sccwrp.org. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in environmental science, environmental engineering, or related fields, and
have a proven ability to publish. Master’s candidates with at least 5 years of direct experience and documented ability to conduct independent research will also be considered. The researcher will work out of our recently renovated, fully equipped laboratories in Costa Mesa, California. SCCWRP offers competitive wages that are commensurate with experience, and a rich benefits package. Applications will be considered until the position is filled. SCCWRP is an equal opportunity employer.
